Challenges shrink CEO tenure

Association leaders are serving less time in the top job, according to a new examination of turnover by Association Intel, the online database of associations, leader and salary information. In a sample of 1,476 nonprofit organizations, the tenure for trade groups averages 6.81 years now; in professional societies, leadership drops to 5.5 years. The average length of service for all nonprofit leaders is about 6.17 years. The trend is a distinct change from just 20 years ago, when longtime leaders retired after several decades of service at an organization.
